In an attempt to discover great film scores, Richard and I lead this thread off with...
The Empire Strikes Back | John Williams (Jared)
The Great Escape | Elmer Bernstein (Richard)
What are some other great scores out there?

Leadbelly...1976 Film. Fred Karlin (happens to be my stepgrandfather) wrote the original music, or score, for this film. Many musicians including Janis Joplin and Pearl Jam paid tribute to Huddie Leadbetter. Leadbelly was his nickname. Other than Robert Johnson, I would say he is likely the most reknowned individual for paving the way for blues. At any rate, it's hard to find, but worth it.
