I'm hosting a mic pre shootout at my studio this weekend to help determine my next purchases. All of the manufacturers have been kind enough to lend me their high-end pres for the event, so I have quite a nice array for now - Millenia HV3C, Millenia Origin, Groove Tubes ViPREs, Manley Slam, Manley TNT, Martech HSS-1, True Precision 8, Thermionic Culture Earlybird 2, Neve 1073s, a few I'm forgetting, and my own Avalon vt737sps and Chandler TG2. A few of my fellow composer pals (Chris Tyng, Frankie Blue, maybe David Kitay) and a handful of engineers (Bobby Fernandez, Gordon Fordyce, Mike Aarvold, maybe Dan Wallin) are participating and some musician and vocalist friends have volunteered to be guinea pigs. If anybody is interested I'll post the findings here.

Dem be some mighty expensive pre-amp units. I would be interested to hear what unit you found to stand out above the rest. No need to spend too much time on writing out details, because it would probably go over my head. Duh! Thanks for the update. I hope you kids find a unit that you like.
My PreSonus TUBEPre is awesome! Super quiet and yet fat with sound! ok...I'm just kidding... Har de Har Har.

The shootout was quite an undertaking. We started around 7pm and didn't wrap up til 3am - and at that we really just scratched the surface in many ways. We recorded all of our tests in Protools, but haven't listened back yet. But our collective first impression was that the Thermionic Culture Earlybird 2 rocks! It sounded consistently great on every instrument we tried it on, winning most categories and always in the top three. In the category of multi-channel pres the Universal Audio 4110 sounded the best on drums, just edging an API 3124. I loved the Neve 1272 on elctric guitar, but not so much on piano and vocals. More to come after playback!

How did the tests in playback sound? Were you or anyone in your group able to make a purchase decision based on the playback?

don't know if you will ever see this, but thought I would try- long time from the old neighborhood. My kids are nearly grown. Still remember seeing you and Gary in Daytona Beach. Followed your career since. Guess all the practice paid off. Rob Crabtree
