Okay, here is some news - I got a call last week from the post production supervisor. He told me that the show is reverting to my original theme music (the so-called "U.K. theme) - albeit a bit truncated. Here's hoping they stick with it now!

Rockin! Thanks for update Richard!!! I look forward to hearing the theme again!! I am up here in Seattle this week showing off reaktor 5 and am going to 'The Chapel' tonight, a church that has been converted into some swank club...we'll see if it measures up to NYC's Limelight which I don't think is around anymore. Speaking of good uses for churches- I had the pleaure of working in Bearsville, New York at a studio that was a converted church- interesting acoustics! Also, thanks for the belated tribute to Robert Palmer. I think you should write a 'Surely you must be Joking Richard Gibbs' kind of book. Sounds like you have some cool experiences like that to share! Thanks, jonathan

I thought about writing a book, but I don't know that enough people would be interested. Kinda the height of ego, don't you think? I think I'll keep posting installments here until I have enough to assemble. Looking forward to Reaktor5!

The music for Battlestar Galactica is some of the best music I have ever heard for a show. (For most things, actually). Is there any way I could get my hands on the lyrics for To Kiss or Not To Kiss? They are so beautiful. ^-^

Thank you, Ashela. The lyric for To Kiss or Not to Kiss is actually the same as the main title to the series. It is the Gayatri mantra, which is in Sanskrit.
AUM BHOOR BHUWAH SWAHA, TAT SAVITUR VARENYAM BHARGO DEVASAYA DHEEMAHI DHIYO YO NAHA PRACHODAYAT

Kind of scary for sure...the other consequence of going to that site was watching the zappa interview on crossfire during reagan years - that boiled my blood too.
Hmmmm interesting - thanks for link Richard!

I bought the Season 1 CD, and I love the female vocal on what is listed as the UK version (although it is played on the US theme as well). What I'd like to know is - are there lyrics and a translation to this moving lament?

Ok. I found the lyrics on this page and the translation via google for "Gayatri mantra", but why is it called "to kiss or not to kiss?"

Welcome to the boards, Diana. In the miniseries (and the soundtrack for same) I wrote a cue named 'To Kiss or Not to Kiss', using the Gayatri mantra. When time came to write the theme for the regular season series it was requested that I use that same mantra again, even though it is an entirely different piece of music. Capice? As far as the US/UK confusion goes - during the first season of the show my theme was used in the UK and Canada, but due to SciFi Network edict a somewhat different theme that was half mine was aired in the US only. At the beginning of the second season the SciFi honchos decided to revert to my original theme, formerly referred to as the UK theme during the first season (and hence called such on the first season soundtrack). Dig around on this thread and you'll find further explanation of this confusion. Hope that helps. Thanks for caring in any case!

Richard, I'm new to this forum. I am an avid fan of the series Battlestar Galactica. As most would agree, the series would not be nearly as good without this fantastic music. Music is so underrated!! I read some interview you had regarding the contraversy surrounding this theme song and the changes in it you did not like. You mentioned that music is usually an afterthought. This really surprises me. Music gives the feel to the movie. Most scary movies would not be scary without the music. Anyway, I wanted to say you have done a marvel of a composition here. Great work!!! I would also like to ask some technical questions behind it. I see that you have references to Native Instruments on your website. How much, if any, of the Battlestar Galactica song was done on a DAW? I ask because I have recently started delving in the world of music. All I have is my PC, external MIDI keyboard, Cakewalk Sonar and many upon many VST/DXi plugins. I even have Native Instrument's Battery 2. As of late, I have been writing Trance tracks, but I love all sorts of genres - including movie themes. Today, companies like Native Instruments with their Kontakt 2 and Cakewalk with their Dimension Pro use extremely high quality samples such that one person can create scores like this - assuming, of course, they have the musical inclination to do so . I would like your opinion on these types of software and if you use any of them for writing your music. Thanks, David Adams

Hello David - welcome aboard.
I use a plethora of programs to write and produce music - everything I do is computer based. My primary DAW is a Protools HD system, fully blown. I am one of the few composers that I know of that actually uses the MIDI in Protools - most use Logic or Digital Performer and then transfer to Protools later. I prefer the simplicity of staying on one platform the whole time - makes global editing and changes very easy. Other than that I am running four Gigastudios with a fairly massive library, a dedicated softsynth computer loaded with Atmosphere, Absynth, Pro-53, Battery, Kontakt, Reason, Oddity, and a ton of other programs all hosted in Ableton Live and clocked to Protools. I'm also running Live in Protools as a rewire slave, serving as a liquid audio loop sequencer. It has been a long time - many years - since I actually wrote a score with a pencil on a pad. I miss those days. Battlestar was written and produced with this rig - but nothing ever replaces live players. We recorded the orchestra for the miniseries up in Seattle into Protools. We had to go there to avoid recording with union players, over my objections. At least now the series is recorded using union players (when needed) here in L.A.
Good luck with your music!

The music is indeed hauntingly beautiful, and that voice angelic. It sets the mood for the entire show, you feel all their angst and hope in that opening music. Just incredible, I wish there was an entire album of that music and her voice! Thanks so much!!
