Ok, heres the trailer. talkaboutit.us/trailer04.movYou will need quicktime to view it and It may take a minute to load. Anyway, The female vocal part begins when the windows break. I dont mean to make anyone mad here, especially Richard, I have no problem buying anything if I can find it to buy. And As I stated Richard, your my best new artist (and Bear) Thanks.

Interesting trailer. The music is a melange - some of it is mine from the miniseries, some of it may be Bear's from the series. The female vocal section is unfamiliar to me - it could be Bear's, but I don't know.

Richard, Thank you so much for your great work on the score. I have a question, how did you get the job for composing the mini-series? Did you work with Ron Moore at all, who hired you?
Thanks

Thanks for the kind words! I was brought on board the Galactica mini-series by the director, Michael Rymer. I had co-composed (with Jonathan Davis) the score for his previous movie, Queen of the Damned. I didn't actually meet Ron Moore until it was time to start scoring the series proper.

TOO SAD? Okaaaaay... Perhaps the SciFi Honchos haven't actually sat down and watched the show. To sum it up: Everybody dies and the world ends at the beginning of the series! IT'S A SAD STORY! *Rolls eyes* The North American version of the theme is a prime example of what happens when a composer is FORCED to compose something. Sorry Richard, but the North American version is surprisingly medeocre. You can tell it was done under duress We have a long list of works "composed on demand", and with every one of them... ...we make sure our names aren't attached to them. SciFi has made a serious error here. Okay here is the update. Apparently Bonnie Hammer (Scifi Network head honcho) has been very unhappy with the approach of the main title music as it is airing in England - too sad, I am told. Honestly I don't disagree totally - my first thought was to write a rousing main title way back when, but I was dissuaded from doing so at the time. At any rate they cut together a new piece of music consisting of a piece of instrumental score from the show going into the existing taiko drum piece. They asked me to "smooth it out" and improve it, but only slightly. I personally don't care for what they have done and have passed - they have basically squeezed the emotion from the opening, in my opinion. Bear is taking a stab at pleasing them now - I'm over it.

Who can we contact at Sci Fi (and how) in order to push for the UK theme?
Thanks Vip

Y'know, I don't know. I guess you could write directly to Bonnie Hammer c/o SciFi Network - she is the one who insisted on the change and has the power to do something about it. Good luck!

Do you know where I can get the address? I know there's a few of us out there who really like the UK theme. Everyone I've had listen to both themes (including folks who don't watch the show) prefer the UK theme. With an address I'm sure we can make a case.
Thanks again..

While I appreciate the sentiment, I'm no help here. I've never dealt directly with anyone from Scifi, thus have no address or contact for you. I'm also taking a detached stance on this issue - I don't think my obviously biased take will help your case. Good luck!

who is that guy that posted about the tracey ullman show?? he sounded like he was on a combination of speed and night train. i saw the "tracey live and exposed" tonight and thought it was fabulous. i also thought the band rocked the house. who was the guy on the side with the barret and the dreadlocks. honestly if you needed a trombone player i probobaly could have hooked you up. not to be didactic or condensending or anything, but you guys are BAD (i mean good). keep up the good work. perhaps we can get a copy over to the troops for a moral booster. dude with too much time on his hands

We called Bonnie an inept tone-deaf bimbo because of the theme issue... does that help? Do you know where I can get the address? I know there's a few of us out there who really like the UK theme. have i mentioned that those smileys make me nauseous when i look at them above the "message box"? anyway, i have never seen b.g.lactica, but i must say that people seem to really dig it. i feel like i have a pretty good handle on the "good" the "bad" and the "ugly" of network (is it network?) television, so perhaps i should check it out. when is the show on? if you are brave enough to let me know, i will give it my own review. i think you know where i "am coming from". a question for mr. gibbs/composer... when you conduct the orchestra on a scoring date do you wear a suit? do you use one of those plastic batons with the cork thing at the end? do you require the "band' " to observe militaristic adherence" to that annoying click thing? what do you have for lunch?i usually like a tuna sandwich for lunch and maybe a cup of soup, as i am watching my girlish figure. can i have your social security number? i won't do anything bad with it, i just want it so i can feel like you trust me. those smiley things are really, well you know. one more thing...

Richard,
I was curious as to why you chose not to do the series. I know it's because you worked on Fat Albert, but was it more profitable for you to do that?
After now receiving my copy of BSG Season 1, Bear did a great job, but my opinion is you are very missed here. I really wish you could have stayed on with the series. The mini series soundtrack is in my top 5 scores and I listen to it all the time. I can't say I will be listening to this one like that at all. There is something missing that was in the miniseries score that did not make it to the Season 1 score.

Hello Jared
Yes, scoring Fat Albert was massively more profitable. I would have to work on Battlestar for more than three seasons to approach the money I was paid for Fat Albert. And I have scored another feature (The Honeymooners) and music directed a special (Tracey Ullman) since finishing Fat Albert.
Series scoring can be (and often is) a tedious and thankless task. Usually one is not given nearly enough time to create one's best work. I prefer scoring features primarily because of the larger budgets to play with, the (somewhat) expanded amount of time given per minute of finished music, the larger format (big screen, big speakers), and of course, the much much larger amounts of upfront money. I say upfront because television scoring is actually potentially much more lucrative on the back end. I have friends who have scored successful network sitcoms that can easily live off of the royalties generated by syndication for the rest of their lives. Battlestar is on basic cable, which pays royalties at a fraction of the rate of CBS, NBC, and ABC.
Believe me, I left the Battlestar universe with some regret - I love the show, and scoring the mini was a lot of fun. I do love scoring dramatically, probably because I am rarely given the chance to do so (typecast as I am in comedy). However, one of the most enjoyable things about scoring features is that you get to change your approach/palette/mindset for each new movie. I don't know if I could maintain a standard week in and week out on a series that would make me happy. I have done it in the past (the first season of The Simpsons), but I was just a pup then!
