Hi there folks, along the lines of posting about open source tools that are useful, I thought I would share the results of a project I am working on called the XSPF PHP Playlist Generator. Its quite a mouthful, but does something very simple - it allows you to make a dynamic XSPF playlist of mp3 from the contents of a server folder.
The job it simplifies is maintaining playlists of mp3. For example, if you need to upload a new mp3 to a web server and make this available with an embedded flash player; normally you would have to edit a playlist for that player. Instead, this script reads a folder's contents and generates an mp3 playlist including id3 tags. There are other components with this system namely, a free open source flash mp3 player that you can embed in your web pages. The zip file package at sourceforge includes a single folder you can move out to your website root that contains everything you need to get started. After copying that folder, you then upload your mp3...
My contribution to the project was to make the script work with multiple mp3 folders, make the tag reading more robust to avoid errors, the new package structure and the included documentation.
If any of you are musicians and are looking for a quick and free way of providing mp3 playback on your site, then this is a good resource for you. Especially considering that updates are easy!
To see an example of how this works, you can check it out in action here:

Then enter one of the project folders...
If you are interested in obtaining this free and open resource, visit the project page at sourceforge:
sourceforge.net/projects/php-xspf-gen
If you would like to read about the technologies used in our package:
www.xspf.org/
musicplayer.sourceforge.net/
Ok that sounded too official...anyhow - maybe someone could use this!
Thanks Richard!

ps: for BSG fans, 'yourcall' in 2006 has a section that reminded me of some music from the miniseries.
