I get people asking, so here goes - some random Boingo memories (forgive me if they are a bit fuzzy, I did leave in 1984!)
Being bombed by quarters at Magic Mountain after Danny made an off-the-cuff remark about how the horn players needed money. The extreme pitch of the seating area meant that we were being pelted with coins from above. It was kind of scary. Kerry's Yamaha amp was actually turned off by a random coin that managed to hit the recessed power button on the front.
Splitting my shorts in half in front of hundreds of thousands of people at the US Festival during our two minute "tap check" sound check. I had to haul ass (literally) back to the dressing trailer to put on another pair and make it back in time for the set.
Breaking down in our cheeseball camper van as we pulled into NYC early in the morning on our first tour there. A bunch of us piled out in our underwear and pjs and pushed it the last couple of blocks to the cockroach infested fleabag hotel we were to stay in.
Breaking my foot in New Orleans while walking down the hallway of our hotel. I was carrying my suitbag over my shoulder and somehow the doorhook snagged the underside of my right heel of my tennis shoe. I literally pulled my own foot out from under myself and fell flat on my face, managing to break a couple of bones in my foot in the process. That night we played on a large boat on the Mississippi - I performed the whole show sitting with my extremely swollen right foot soaking in a bucket of icewater the whole time.
Opening for The Tubes at UCSB. Sluggo, Dale, Leon and I sat in for their encore of White Punks on Dope. Dale lent me his valve trombone to use - I play slide trombone (which was at home in my closet) so I had to quickly learn the valve positions necessary to make the right noises. The girls from The Tubes were slithering up both my legs while I was trying to play the right notes and keep an eye on my new bride's reaction in the front row. She thought it was hilarious how uncomfortable I was.
By far my favorite was meeting my wife-to-be at a show we played in the Westlake High gymnasium. Sam and I were watching the opening act (Tex and the Horseheads!) from the back of the gym when I spotted her in the middle of the floor. I turned to Sam and said (swear to God) "See that blonde? I'm gonna marry her!" I went over and talked to her and her friends - none of them knew I was in the band. The next time she saw me I was on stage. She had to leave mid-set as her ride was leaving. The band had to stop playing because the principal jumped up on stage and wrested the mic from Danny's hand - he was freaked out because the kids were slam dancing and he thought there was a riot breaking out. While the mic tug-of-war was going on Linda got a note with her phone number sent to me saying she had to leave and to give her a call sometime. The postscript is that she didn't know that I kept that note. Last year for Valentine's Day I had it framed and gave it back to her. The true fans amongst you may remember her as the sexy blonde in the blue nightie smacking Danny with a pillow in the video for Little Girls.
Anybody else?

Here's 9fingeredElf's hazy and I think some what accurate concert memories, in some what chronological order:
My 1st concert was at the John Anson Ford theater in Hollywood. It was a free concert if you brought in a toy to Licorice Pizza sponsored by KWEST. The opening act was Suburban Lawns. What I remember from the concert was parking was insane, The person I went with filmed the whole concert and never asked him for a copy (stupid me), and the xylophone (baliphone?) instrument played by Danny and Kerry Hatch (I think it was him) for the song Grey Matter.
Halloween concert at the Santa Monica Civic with opening act The Fibonaccis. I remember buying a bootleg concert t-shirt and getting it home and realizing they spelled Halloween wrong, going with a date who just wanted to sit in her seat the whole time, and seeing weird Fellini movies in between bands (the one with ants coming out of a whole in someones hand and one with someone cutting someones eye ball with a razor stick in my mind).
I saw Forbidden Zone at a midnight showing at Cal State Northridge.
Cal State Northridge concert. I remember working my way up to the stage and throwing cards at Kerry Hatch. One the front page of the Northridge paper reviewing the concert, if you look real close you can see me in front of Kerry.
Going some where in Long Beach at a record store for an autograph signing and having a Boingo shirt with all of your autographs.
Magic Mountain. Remember standing in the rain waiting to get into the Magic Mountain theater and I do remember, at one point in the show, everyone throwing coins, Richard I wasn't one of them.
US Festival. Remember it being really hot, making my way all the way up to the stage, getting sprayed with water to keep us cool, and screaming along when you played "Sweat" and having to wait forever for Clash to get on stage and start playing.
Beverly Theater. Remember the concert had to be rescheduled because Danny had to have an appendectomy.
Some where in Long Beach in a big tent. Remember seeing Fear as one of the opening bands, a couple people climbing the tent poles, some one dive off the stage and everyone moved and he fell to the concrete floor and coming up with a bloody forehead and screaming that's the coolest thing I've ever done.
Hollywood Palladium. Remember getting in the mosh pit someone on my shoulders.
Greek Theater. Remembering it was the first Boingo concert I saw that was assigned seating and Danny yelling to the crowd come on down so I ran to the stage and a security guard grabbing my shoulder and escorting me out of the concert and hearing my favorite song "Ain't This The Life" while standing outside the theater.
Some TV show. Remember it being somewhere in Hollywood, seeing a bunch of bands before Boingo came on, and not being able to find when it played on TV.
Universal Amphitheatre, a few times. Remembering one of the times I saw Boingo there was one of my first dates with my now wife and getting one of the drum head that Vatos threw out to the crowd and having it ripped from my hand and not being able to get it back.
The fondest memories of Boingo concerts were the annual Halloween shows at Irvine Meadows. Each year for as many years as they played there I'd get a bunch of my Boingoloid friends, rent a Limo, play Forbidden Zone on the VCR, and drinking ourselves silly and always having a great time, except for the year when when we were in the back row, standing on our chairs and one of my friends falling backward and slamming her head on the concrete below. One of 2 concerts that I didn't see all the way to the end.
My last Boingo show was the Farewell concert at Irvine Meadows in 1995. Remember listening to the songs and thinking to myself that song was great but I wish they would play this song and before I got that thought out of my head Danny was singing that song.
I was fortunate to see Boingo over 20 times from 1980 to 1985 and loving everyone of the concerts.
And that has been my crazy trip down memory lane. I guess when you love a band as much as I loved Boingo those memories stay with you for a long time.

Richard, I have a really great soundboard recording of that Westlake High show, complete with principal asking people to calm down, the class president doing his best to help and Danny chiding the audience that Oingo Boingo is not the Dead Kennedys, so would they please stop spitting at him! Do you have that? If not I'd be happy to ship a copy off, post it to an ftp or deliver one to you at the Halloween thing. mattystrick@yahoo.com

9 - Danny should refund your money for that Greek show. It always made me cringe when Danny would exhort the crowd to rush the stage. Although I agreed with his need to feel the rush and the energy of the fans at the lip of the stage, invariably the security guards and management of the venue would be pissed (who cares), the people who paid for front row seats felt ripped off, and every once in a while someone would get hurt - once or twice even suing the band.
Matthew - I MUST have that audio, particularly of the moment with the principal. Maybe I could get one of those picture frames that play audio and frame Linda's note in it, with the principal's voice! Can you send a few minutes encompassing that to my personal e-mail thru the site?

Hi, Rich, I was Vatos girlfriend then wife from 1982-1989. I remember Linda very well! I was so impressed by how she worked out every single day when she was pregnant with your first child! She was so incredibly beautiful to me! I am still friends with Nancy Taylor who is back in Cocoa Beach and through her I keep up with Karen Childs. I have been living in Miami since 1994 and I am still designing clothes for a New York company called New York Laundry. I ran into to Steve Bartek at Nate n/ Al's two years ago while I was on a shopping trip back there. What a sweet heart! I enjoyed watching you and listening to your music on Tracy Ulman's HBO show, my favortie all time show! I have always been impressed your talent and accomplisments, Rich! Take care! Edith

Well this is truly a "fanatic" story: the year must have been '83. Two young, petite blonde girls, known as the "Valley Weather Girls" in Bakersfiled, CA, this was a play on words for those living in California for obvious reasons. Valley girls were from the Los Angeles area of San Fernando Valley whereas the more korny redneck area of California, the central valley. So these 16 year olds came in and did their best Moon-Unit-Zappa-Valley-Girl imitation of the weather each morning before school. Local celebrities with their own KKXX t-shirts. Wow. Their payment was free tickets and backstage passes to most concerts, and this year's biggie...Oingo Boingo, the argument...could the band come home with the girls that night. You see, one of the girls' dads was a died in the wool rocker, and the girls always told the bands they met (The Bangles, Thompson Twins, Missing Persons, Devo, The GoGos, Fear, DK, etc.) would get the same invitation: a nice big cozy home with big leather couches to relax on while they drank their beer only minutes from all the nicer hotels which they were likely staying at. So finally, dad agreed, and if the band could be persuaded they could come home with the girls, as he'd be there with his five guitars. lol.
Well, Girl 1 dressed in her reddest, tightest, Cyndi Lauperess, tool laden gown dragged her friend to the front just like a typical er uh, groupie. So to the best of my recollection, however a set list would confirm this, near the end of the show the band played “I Love Little Girls”. Girl 1, who had her press pass/backstage pass firmly tucked in her bra, had her folded forearms planted resolutely on the filthy front stage of The Magestic Fox Theatre. As Danny dramatically pointed out to different girls while he sang, Girl 1 went wild when she was given that honor. So she made it her goal to get on stage. She kept putting her hand up and reaching and reaching, finally, because she either typified the archetype of the song’s subject or because she practically insisted, Danny pulled her up on stage. He sang approximately two lines of the song to her, while the crowd went wild, Girl 1 practically fainted. And as soon as it began, it was over. Girl 1 felt the tug of a roadie’s arm, and she was soon on the floor next to the other “Valley Weather Girl” screaming crazily. After the show, there was a gate to get backstage. The press pass/backstage pass almost wasn’t sufficient; however, the roadie and Kerry gave a nod. Soon the girls were roaming around a bunch of guys near a bus and a few cars who seemed like they just wanted to get out of there. The girls boldly walked up to Danny, Kerry, a few roadies and other band members and said the following: “My dad said you can come over to my house. It’s big and comfortable. No one would know where you are. It’s quiet, and my dad would love to meet you guys, he taught me how to play guitar at the age of 11. There is beer and plenty of couches, what do you say?” It sounded like a huge crowd that erupted in laughter. The girls hung around for another half an hour feeling like their quest was hopeless, but then a miracle occurred. Girl 1 didn’t know the names of all the band members. She knew Danny’s name. So Danny walked up and said, “were you serious about your house?” Girl 1 almost jumped and replied, “Yes, yes, you can even call him on the pay phone!” So off the girls headed with what seemed like half of the band and a good deal of roadies. A stop by the liquor store ended with a car full of Becks Dark and Light. I told them we only had Bud at our house. Well, we lost a couple of guys on the way, but my house was only ten minutes from the Fox, and we made it there with at least ten guys. Danny was NOT one of them. However, when the story was retold to my friends, he was…lol. So the guys met my dad and hit it off immediately. They jammed with him and his numerous guitars and other instruments playing classic rock of all things with some of the older members. They talked music. The girls drooled. But the girl’s just ended up in Girl 1’s bedroom calling all of her friends telling them that Oingo Boingo was at her house. Not many believed it, but there was no way that the girl’s were going to risk leaving to get film. To this day, Girl 1 has a towel that one of the guys actually took a shower and used! Well, that is this Girl 1’s Oingo Boingo story. What is it with Oingo Boingo and Bakersfield? Lol. Just a nice bunch of guys who were nice enough to kick back in a living room rather than a stuffy Hotel room.

P.S., I'm pretty confident that a skinny keyboard player was trying to make something of a little odd casio, as the upright piano was in the front livingroom rather than the family room. In my opinion, Kerry Hatch and Richard Gibbs were two of the most musically knowledgable and kind guys. That's according to my father as well, and for some reason those are two names he remembers. They were all gentlemen.
