I guess it is all in the receiver as to what is strange. Just thought i would throw it out. I love at Bjork as strange as well as Eliot Carter.

well my assumption is that mr. mark was actually a figmentaion of our imagination running away from all of us. he was obviously a BSG fan of some variety who on deep inner reflection decided that going to the "gibbsalot" site was more than he could bear. the talk being moderately "smart" and "snappy", i have a feeling he felt unable to keep up with the johnsons (will that be filtered?). we of the zuma bunch know what's what and that's that. enough already. on to more important not to mention inviting topics.
strange music....
kimotion seems to want an explaination as to the nature and/or defenition of "strange music". miles davis (he played the trumpet) once said, "there are no wrong notes". personally i think all music is strange, we are the ones as musicians, composers, fans, ect. that make it un-strange through interperetation. i know that sounds ridiculous, but it is true. all great film, art, music, ect. is about perception and is totally subjective. for instance i hated the little film called E.T. some people really enjoyed it. there you have it. the little guy at the end, near death, lives, when in all actuallity he should have died considering what he went through. he did help several of the stars of the movie finance their stints in rehab, so i guess his living did some good.
the pope...
although i disagreed with everything the "holy father" stood for, i must say he was quite the charismatic figure. he also had an interesting life as an actor, ect. he would have been great as christ in "the passion of the" having that constant dialouge with god and all. i suppose he would have needed to be about 50 years younger. the studio honchos would never go for it. i also thought that jim carrey would have been a good christ, as well as robert (you talkin to me) deniro.
music...
music is a delicate balance between commerce and art. to all you composers out there, good luck. most films stink. you will get your share. do them, make the money for you and your significant people, and move on. you will get the one good film like book of stars(which if you haven't checked out the score, you should by a one mr. gibbs). as far as you musicians out there, there are no bad notes. play un-afraid and un-encumbered with what came before you. listen only to your inner voice as your harshest critic, and make it real.

kimotion brings up some interesting points. i personaly do not consider bjork or the wonderful elliot carter's music as strange. i find the term "strange music" to be a bit of a misleading phrase.
stan "strange music" ridgeway lead us all down a path he probably didn't intend. my guess would be that he "threw out " that phrase for the sake of identification, not for a meditation on the merits, or lack of "alternative" art. kimotion needs to understand as i said in my earlier essay that music like any other art form is purely (thank god) subjective. it has nothing to do with religion or the body politica. we play, we compose, we listen, because we dig it. you like bjork, so do i (except for the swan dress). you think mr. carter's music constitutes strange, good for you. listen to harry partch or even the symphonic zappa, and you could find elliot running for cover. how about igor, or manpou or ennio miroccone (my favorite score? the mission)? they all have their moments of "strangeness".listen, reflect, purchase. your perspective is important in a world of many dis-interested, and un-interested, un educated music fans.the rock world? EXTC, peter gabriel, U2, springsteen, the police, john mayer, gillian welch, lucinda williams, all owe their debt of gratitube to Cash, dylan, bacharach, victor young, jimmy web, ect. you get the picture. for me i listen to everything, and collect every C.D. i can get my hands on. that has been my education since after high school. my playing (i am a musician sometimes) benefits from all styles of music.
kimotion...
listen to everything, be open, and find your niche. if you are a composer you need to open your arms to all styles. if you are a player you must open your heart to all that makes you swoon. have i told you all lately how much i despise those smiley things...
